Unity Hands and Tie-Dye
We concluded our unit about the Elements and Principles of Design by talking about Unity and how it is the ultimate goal in a piece of art. Each student made a colored paper collage using paper scraps in one color and then they each traced the outline of one of their hands to cut out and put over the colored paper background. We had a quick vacation week during the week of the fourth and when we came back we had a special tie-dye day at school. Since last year students created houses for a large collaborative piece, I decided that we would use the hands that students made to create a large collage to raffle off on Family Fun Night. During tie-dye week a couple classes were able to make hands to add to our collage using scratch art paper that I had left over. I'm planning on putting all these hands together to form a large collage/painting that will be a cool collaborative piece of abstract art. (Still in the works!) Staff were even able to participate in tie-dye day and make our own cool shirts that represent our school. Although I am the art teacher, I have to say I have never actually done tie-dye before and I was very happy with the result!
